There are quite a few tricks to renting happily on this island, so read on to find the best place for your happy new home.
Key West is a whole world of weird. The list of music, festivals, parades, clubs, parties, and ocean-lovin' fun could have you reading on for days. So, we'll just cover the basics and let you figure it all out the hard way (trust me, it's much more fun that way). This little island city is a tropical paradise with year-round perfect weather, some amazing fishing, diving, sailing, and beach bumming, as well as a nightlife that never sleeps, or even cares if it's night for that matter. There is no hustle and bustle in Key West. It's a slow-rolling tourist town where driving, biking, or even walking too fast could end in disaster.
The next little tidbit you should know about living in Key West is that you can't count on T.V. or A/C to pass the days. Many property rentals don't come with either, and many people don't care. It's never too hot or too cold, and there's really never a day so boring that you would resort to the soulless slosh of television.
One last piece of advice before we jump into apartment specifics: choose your neighborhood carefully. If you love the resort life, then look for the neighborhoods dominated by luxury hotels, condos, and apartments. If you'd rather live among the locals, then look in the old town neighborhoods such as Bahama Village. Or, if you want to see just how weird this island gets, then find your way to Duval Street.
There are a couple of things to consider when choosing your new home. If you want a hotel-style rental, then there are plenty of luxury apartments and condos to fit this description. If things like resort style pools, spas, saunas, tennis courts, club houses, boat slips, and high rise balconies looking down on the city and the sea are important, then be prepared to spend. There are also tons of roommate-wanted ads in local classifieds, which could land you in an amazing house, a luxury condo, or an ocean-front property with a dock, boat, and pool for an incredibly affordable price. No matter what or where you rent, your property will be surrounded by lush tropical landscapes and fun-loving people.
So, that's Key West 101. Best of luck, and don't forget to have fun!
