Upon learning a bit about the town, things like an aluminum plant during World War II, a list of senators born here, and rock n' roll music should all stand out. Today, Sheffield is more than that. Teeming with things to do, Sheffield's pleasant climate during most of the year, close-knit community, and southern small town charm make it a place to be.
Moving to Sheffield
Although Sheffield is a little on the small side compared to some of the other cities in Alabama, it's still a renter's paradise. 43.2% of the housing units in Sheffield are being rented, which is much higher than the state average. For one thing, locating a property here is surprisingly easy. Apartment complexes are spread out throughout the city with the most desirable locations facing the lake. However, these house and apartment rentals in Sheffield tend to go fast, so you need to know how to get in the door before anyone else does. Here are a few tips to help you in your search for the perfect place.
Expand Your Search
Don't just limit your housing search to houses and apartments for rent in the newspaper. Expand your search to online directories and, if you can, ride around and visit the individual apartment complex directly. You'd be surprised at how many apartments actually don't list their vacancies. As soon as you see available apartments for rent, contact the rental office immediately to find out what you need in order to get your application going.
Bring the Right Documents
If you plan on visiting a few properties at the same time or in the same day, bring all your documents along with you. These documents include proof of income, proof of employment or self-employment, references and contact details. Some form of identification, such as a state driver's license or passport, is needed. More importantly, if you plan on running an application or credit check at the time of viewing, you will need your Social Security card. It is also worth mentioning that even if you're not applying for the apartment the same day you're looking, you will still need your identification card. Most apartment complexes will not let you view a property without first having your ID or passport on hand to show them.
Get Your Timing Right
Although there is no right or wrong time to search for properties in Sheffield, there are times when searching yields a lot more variety. This is mainly in spring and early fall. However, if you're looking for a good move-in special, try searching around the holidays like Christmas, New Year's and the Fourth of July. You may find rental apartments in communities that run a no deposit or first month free special during these holidays. Call ahead of time to inquire.
Transportation During Your Search
Sheffield isn't exactly a major city, so there isn't a transit system here. If you need to tour several pads around the city, you'll have to do it by walking or driving. The good thing about Sheffield is that it's a very accessible place, so driving around shouldn't pose a problem. In fact, you may stumble upon your perfect 2 bedroom apartment for rent while en route to somewhere else!
Neighborhoods in Sheffield
Sheffield is a very small town, but there are a few distinct neighborhoods. Apartments in premier areas are located in the downtown area and alongside the Lake. Other areas, though, may be more affordable.
City Center: A walkable part of town, you can drink at Wandie's 2nd Street Pub, eat at D P's Classic Grill, and shop at Town Plaza Shopping Center. This is the priciest part of town.
West Sheffield: Near Wilson Lake, highlights here include Park West, Brewster Elementary School, and Rivermont Park.
East Sheffield: Sheffield High School, proximity to Route 2, and Tri Cities Park are three noteworthy things about East Sheffield. You'll find a nice variety of housing here.
Living in Sheffield
As previously noted, Sheffield is a driving town. However, if you live near the center of town, you will be able to walk to a lot of spots. Having a car, though, offers you the most convenience here.
Sheffield boasts a wide array of attractions to keep locals and visitors busy. Once you've unpacked your bags, turn on that famous song, "Sweet Home Alabama", to tap into the rock 'n roll soul of the town. Head to the Sheffield City Indoor Pool if you need to cool off. Picnic at 10th Avenue Park and enjoy the breeze. If you want to relax and people watch, go to the Colbert County Courthouse Square. The Ritz Theater always has good shows. If you love music, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame is short drive away. When you just want to be entertained, the shopping, dining, and nightlife scenes are all solid. By the end of your first week here, you'll be chanting "Sweet Home Sheffield" in your sleep.
