It remains a mystery as to how Fort Valley achieved its name, as the city never had a fort. It is however believed that the name was changed through a transcription error at the time the post office was designated.
The city of Fort Valley resides in Peach County, Georgia, and is part of the Macon metropolitan area. The main employer in the city is the Blue Bird Corporation, which manufactures buses. Interestingly enough however, there are no bus routes within the actual town itself. Otherwise, in keeping with the bygone years, agriculture still plays a large role as an employer within the area. Although agriculture is very heavily mechanized in this day and age, there's still plenty of "hands-on" required to keep things ticking over sweetly. Football is a big thing for small town Fort Valley with its' less than 9,000 inhabitants. The city boasts one of the best football teams in the whole of the state of Georgia.
